We got our start as Northern Radio in 1940 and we specialize in restoring antique radios.

There is something about having an old radio that takes you back in time. A simpler time. Actually being able to listen to old radio programs on that old radio is the cat’s meow! It’s one thing to own an antique radio and have it sitting on the shelf versus having it working as it did back in the day.

Some radios are over 50 years old and can be in very rough shape by the time they come in for repair. All electrolytic capacitors from the 1960s or older are typically replaced. This process is known as “recapping” and is a common practice on all antique units. Recapping is necessary to perform a quality repair and to ensure peak performance of the unit for years to come. Proper recapping also ensures your safety, protecting you from the potential shock and fire hazards known to exist with the old electrolytic and wax capacitors. It is against our store policy to release an unsafe product that could cause harm to a customer or damage to a dwelling.

If you choose to do so, we can add a Bluetooth receiver to your restored chassis, allowing you to stream old radio shows from your smartphone via radio program apps that are available.

It was not uncommon for brand new radios to break down within the first year of ownership, and in some cases multiple times a year. This was considered normal and is one of the reasons why there used to be so many service centers in any given city. Here at Northern Audio, we use high-quality components and the highest standards in testing to reduce the need for service in the future; however, some of the parts in your radio could be anywhere from 50- 80 years old and can go out at any time. It is not likely, but it can happen.

While your radio is in for service, this is a good time for you to have the cabinet restored, if needed, by a furniture restoration company. When your cabinet is finished, we reinstall your chassis, hereby completing your fully restored radio.

In winter when you take your refurbished treasure home, make sure you allow it to reach room temperature before you plug it in and attempt to use it!

Plugging in cold equipment can damage multiple components and this would not be covered under our 90-day warranty. Properly trained technicians can spot the what, why, and how newly repaired components suddenly fail.
